Hat Trick In El Big Sombrero

Why Mexico rocks this week.

Bribery in the Budget: Apparently, you need to throw some pesos into your monthly budgetary pie chart down south. Mexicans dropped over $2.5 billion in bribes in ’07. This was up over 40% from ’05. The total number of bribes came in at $197 million for the year which is nearly two bribes for every Mexican considering its population of 105 million. Bueno, muy bueno.

Kidnappings: TJ doctors walked out on their jobs for a day in protest. Protest over what? Rising health care costs? Insurance premiums? Slow governmental approval of new drugs? No, not so much. TJ doctors have become prime targets for kidnapping. TJ doctors are now taken for ransom at a rate of one doctor per week. Better cancel that tee time, boys.

Rising Employment: But, hell, time for some good news. Job opportunities might be on the rise down south. The Gulf drug cartel now openly advertises for current and former soldiers to abandon the military and join their ranks. The Gulf cartel is offering “good salary, food and family care.” Nice work. People person? Persuasive? Enjoy sales and closing deals? Then we have a career opportunity for you.

Nice Work La Jolla

La Jolla's solution to dealing with the homeless? They've hired local "civic minded" volunteers to squat on public benches in the hopes of driving the homeless to other locations, anywhere but La Jolla. No kidding? Nice work La Jolla. Is that what it's come to?

However, my money is still on homeless guy, he's got moxy baby and not much more come to think of it. La Jolla, you can Tivo and camp out all day long on your public benches but at some point you'll need to refroth that latte and recharge that BlackBerry. Homeless guy? Not so much. It's not that he's more disciplined than you La Jolla...it's that he has no other place to go. Nice work La Jolla.

Looking forward to seeing the volunteer work high school and college kids will post from their summer internships: Jimmy worked on adult literacy, Janey campaigned for better water protection. And as for Timmy, well Timmy bum-blocked homeless guy all summer long at tony Prospect Street. Nice work, Timmy, nice work.

Pacific Beach Alcohol Ban

Was up in Washington State for most of last year. Back to PB now. Gotta say that the booze ban experiment is working. Pretty much gave up on making that 10 minute walk down to the ocean last year as it just started to get out of hand. Ya, only a small percent, probably zonies, made booze on the beach unworkable, but having this cool off period might get things back to normal. Really doubt they will extend the one year experiment as PB is PB but hopefully, this will create a more acceptable standard for the beach. Hmm, must be getting old I guess.

Pacific Beach Restaurant Walk

The annual Pacific Beach Restaurant Walk is coming up on Tuesday, May 13th from 5 pm to 9 pm. This year, attendees get to sample 20 restaurants for only $20. Looks like the Bahia Belle has also signed on to provide mini-bay sunset cruises with an open cash bar and coffee and dessert selection. PB, fish tacos and a sunset cruise...could it get any better. Guess that's why we pay to live here, kids.

San Diego Public Transportation

My god. Haven't been on a bus in a while and now I remember why. My god. So far, in less than a week, I've had a ring side seat to witness two crackheads threaten to kill each other - one sitting a row in front of me and the other two rows behind me - apparently, one thought the county jail beds were comfortable and the other preferred the downtown shelter beds....good stuff...and this was after moving seats to get away from another tweaker flapping his withered arms around for no apparent reason.

My god, and the other day a nice middle aged lady rocking a bee-hive head suit argued with a semi-toothed transient on whether or not 62 degrees was hot or not. They agreed to disagree.

Basically, my goal with San Diego public transportation is to get from A to B without getting stabbed in the kidney. Batting a 1,000 so far.
